Input and output

Input and output

What is Input-Output? Similar to the computer concept of Input-Output, the reasoning questions based on this topic involves an Input which is given in the form of numbers and words and then gives out an Output following a certain format.

In this type of questions, a message comprising of randomised letters/words or numbers or a combination  of both is given as the input followed by steps of rearrangement to give sequential outputs. The candidate is required to trace out the pattern is the given rearrangement and then dermine the desire output step, according as is asked  in the questions.

Patterns to Look for in the given sequence

1. Arranging the given words in forward/reverse alphabetical order.

2. Arranging the given numbers in ascending/descending order.

3. Writing a particular set of words in the reverse order, stepwise.

4. Changing places of words/numbers according to a set pattern.

The above points are possible criteria which you should look for to determine the pattern in a given rearrangement. In this, in order to find number of steps, write the number below the digit/letter if it  is to be arranged.  However if it is already arrnaged, then number it above and after count the number below the letter/digit, which reveals the number of steps, as shown in example below.

Solved examples

Sol. Carefully observing the sample sequence, we observe that in the given arrangemnet, the numbers have been arranged in decending order (from left to right) in a sequence, altering the position of only one number in each step, followed by the other numbers as it is. The process continues till the whole set of numbers is arranged in descending order.

1. Input:  09        25          16          30          32          18          17          96

Step:        32       09          25          16          30          18          17          06

Step If:    32       30          09          25          16          18          17          06

Step WI:  32       30          25          09          16          18          17          06

Hence, the ans is (a).

2. Input:              16          09          25          27          06          05

Step I:                  27          16          09          25          06          05

Step II:                 27          25          16          09          06          05

The whole set of numbers gets arranged in decending order in step I] itself. So, step II is the last step for the given input. Hence, the answer is (a)

3. Input:              25          08          35          11          88          67          23

(e) Victory 19 high 22 bear 24 age 34

Sol. In the first step, one word which comes last in the dictionary is placed at the first position and other terms are written in the same order. In the 2nd step, the lowest number is placed at the second position. These two steps are repeated to rearrange the terms stepwise in third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eight places. The process continues untill the words are arranged in reversed alphabetical order at alternate positions and the numers are arranged in ascending order, again at alternate positions.

1. Input :             ask         for          me         49          32          64          and        24

Step I :                 me         ask         for          49          32          64          and        24

Step II :                me         24          ask         for          49          32          64          and

Step III :               me         24          for          ask         49          32          64          and

Hence, the answer is (b).

2. Input :             go          now       and        come     72          34          57          25

Step I :                 now       go          and        come     72          34          57          25

Step II :                now       25          go          and        come     72          34          57

Step W :              now       25          go          34          come     and        72          57

Step V:                 now       25          go          34          come     57          and        72

Clearly, step V is the last step. Hence, the answers is (b)

3. Step III :          Yellow   12          tire         92          84          36          goal       life

Step IV :               Yellow   12          tire         36          92          84          goal       life

Step V :                Yellow   12          tire         36          life         92          84          goal

Step VI :               Yellow   12          tire         36          life         84          92          goal

Step VII :              Yellow   12          tire         36          life         84          goal       92

Clearly, step VII is the last step, so, there are four more steps of rearrangement, hence the answer is (b).

4. Step IV :          now       17          mother 23          can         know     47          31

Step V :                now       17          mother 23          know     can         47          31

Step VI :               now       17          mother 23          know     31          can         47

Clearly, step VI is the last step. So, there are two more steps of rearrangement after step IV. Hence the answer is (a).

5. Step II :            Victory 19          22          34          age        bear       high       24

Step III :               Victory 19          high       22          34          age        bear       24
