1. India observes 2nd ‘Javelin Throw Day’ on August 07, 2022

• The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) is celebrating the second ‘Javelin Throw Day’ on August 7, 2022. The day was first observed in 2021 in honour of Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won India’s first Olympic gold medal in athletics at Tokyo. This decision to observe Javelin Throw Day is also an attempt to attract more youth towards the sport and get champions ready for a bright future in athletics ahead.
• Neeraj Chopra has scripted history at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo when he threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to end India’s medal drought in athletics at the Olympics. This is India’s first-ever gold medal in athletics in the history of the Olympics. AFI’s bid to name August 7 as Javelin Throw Day is an attempt to attract more youth to the sport.

2. Gustavo Petro takes oath as the President of Colombia

• Gustavo Petro has sworn in as the first leftist President of Colombia.
• He is a former member of Colombia’s M-19 guerrilla group, who won the presidential election in June 2022 by beating a conservative party candidate.
• He also promised to implement outstanding provisions of the 2016 peace agreement that saw the rebel FARC movement lay down arms after nearly six decades of civil conflict.

3. India starts cooperation with Bahrain-based Combined Maritime Forces

• India has officially began working with the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) of Bahrain.
• Aim: To strengthen collaboration in regional security in the Western Indian Ocean.
• At the India-US 2+2 in April 2022, India had announced that it would join the CMF as an Associate Partner.
• CMF is a multi-national naval partnership (34 nation grouping) to promote security, stability and prosperity across the 3.2 million square miles of international waters.

4. Sharath, Sreeja clinch gold medal in table tennis mixed doubles at CWG

• A. Sharath Kamal and Sreeja Akula won gold in the mixed doubles table tennis after defeating Javen Choong and Karen Lyne (Malaysian) at Commonwealth Games 2022
Other winners:
• India’s Eldhose Paul wins the first-ever gold medal in Men’s Triple Jump.
• Boxer, Nitu Ghangas wins gold in women’s 48 kg category
• Boxer, Amit Panghal won the gold in the 48-51kg weight category • Avinash Sable becomes the first Indian Man claim a medal (silver) in men’s 3000m steeplechase.

5. ITU’s Regional Standardization Forum for Asia & Oceania region begins

• Regional Standardization Forum of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for Asia and Oceania region has been started in New Delhi, hosted by the Communications Ministry.
• Theme of ‘Regulatory and Policy aspects of Telecommunications’.
• MoS for Communications, Devusinh Chauhan has inaugurated the Regional Standardization Forum.
• More than 250 delegates from 20 countries has been participated in the Forum, to provide an insight from policy and regulatory perspective.

6. World Bank provide USD 300 million to Bangladesh for urban area resilience

• The government of Bangladesh has signed an agreement with the World Bank for USD 300 million financing
• Aim: To strengthen its local urban institutions to respond and recover from the Covid 19 pandemic and improve preparedness for future shock.
• It will also help cities and towns of Bangladesh to build back better as they recover from the pandemic and prepare for future shocks.
• The project will carry out labour-intensive public works to ensure water supply.

7. UP Govt plans to double farmers income under ‘Panchamrut Yojana’

• Uttar Pradesh government has announced that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s ‘Panchamrut Yojana’ will help to double the farmers’ income.
• This can be achieved by introducing cost-effective technical measures and promotion of the co-cropping method.
• The UP Government has increased the sugarcane support price by Rs 350 in the last crushing season in advance, which included Rs 340 for normal and Rs 335 for species declared unsuitable.

8. India wins silver in first Commonwealth women’s cricket

• The Indian women’s cricket team has settled for the silver medal in Birmingham after losing to five-time T20 champions Australia (won gold) by 9 runs in the Commonwealth Games 2022 final.
• Other winners:
• Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand won the Bronze Medal in Badminton Doubles.
• Annu Rani won Bronze medal in Women’s Javelin Throw.
• India’s Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker won the gold and silver, respectively, in the men’s triple jump final

10. V Pranav becomes India’s 75th Chess Grandmaster

• V Pranav(15) has become the 75th Grandmaster of India by winning the Limpedea Open in Baia Mare, Romania, after securing his third and final GM norm, to attain the Grandmaster title.
• He had won his maiden GM norm at the Serbia Open in 2021 and the second in the Vezerkepzo GM round-robin tourney in Budapest, Hungary in June 2022.
• He is the 27th Grandmaster from Tamil Nadu (list includes Viswanathan Anand, D.Gukesh and R.Praggnanandhaa among others).
